Non-contact Measurement in Paper industry -- Monitoring Diameter and Width of Paper Rolls

2024-09-24

Monitoring of products, materials and machines is particularly important in the manufacturing industry. Automated, non-manual monitoring can help improve production efficiency, thereby improving corporate benefits. In the paper-making industry, the width of the paper roll is an important monitoring factor. Laser distance sensors are an effective tool for measuring paper rolls. Instead of traditional manual measurement, laser distance sensors, a non-contact measurement method, can effectively measure the dimensional parameters of paper rolls, such as width and roll radius, due to their characteristics of high accuracy, easy installation and use, and low maintenance cost etc.

paper measurement

When measuring the diameter, the Laser Distance Sensor is typically mounted above the paper roll, pointing downwards towards the center of the roll. When the sensor is positioned, it can work in a way that the laser beam can accurately hit the surface of the roll without any obstructions. The laser beam emitted by the sensor is reflected back from the surface of the paper roll. The sensor measures the time it takes for the laser beam to travel to the roll and back, or it may use phase shift or other techniques to determine the distance. Based on this measurement, the sensor calculates the distance from the sensor to the surface of the roll.

When measuring the width, a pair of laser distance sensors can be positioned on opposite sides of the paper roll, facing each other, each sensor measures the distance from its position to the outer edge of the roll, the two measured distances are then combined or subtracted (depending on the specific setup and calculation method) to determine the width of the roll. If the sensors are positioned directly across from each other, the sum of the two measured distances minus the known distance between the sensors gives the width of the roll. Alternatively, if the sensors are calibrated to measure from a common reference point, the difference in their measurements directly indicates the width.

Since laser sensors can measure without physically touching the paper roll, it helps eliminate the risk of damage or wear. Besides, as the technology develops, modern laser sensors offer high precision and repeatability, ensures accurate measurement which is an important reason why laser ranging sensors are widely used. Last but not least, laser sensors can be adapted to measure various sizes and types of paper rolls, and they are designed to withstand harsh industrial environments (IP Protection Sensors) and require minimal maintenance, which can help save both time and cost. By utilizing these techniques and advantages, laser distance sensors provide an efficient and reliable solution for measuring the diameter and width of paper rolls in various industrial applications.
